How to safely clean dangerous mold behind wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I’m getting worried. I finally pulled their wooden wardrobe away from the wall in our bedroom and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold behind it, probably from the humidity. We live in an older building in Bur Dubai and I’m panicking about their health. How do I safely clean this myself, or is it too dangerous and I absolutely need to call a professional?

Based on your description, you are likely dealing with a significant mold colony, and the health symptoms in your children are a major red flag. The "black, fuzzy" appearance is characteristic of several mold types, some of which can produce mycotoxins. Given the climate in Bur Dubai, with its high humidity and the constant cycling of AC units leading to condensation in poorly ventilated areas, this is a common but serious issue.

For a patch large enough to cause health effects, DIY cleaning is strongly discouraged. Disturbing the colony will aerosolize spores and mycotoxins, potentially worsening your children's respiratory issues and contaminating other areas of your home. The porous nature of wood and drywall allows mold to penetrate deep beneath the surface, making surface cleaning ineffective and allowing it to rapidly regrow.

The only safe and effective course of action is a professional inspection and remediation. A certified inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and the full extent of the contamination, which is often far greater than what is visible. This is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol.

For a situation involving health symptoms and a large infestation, professional containment and removal are mandatory. This involves sealing the area with negative air pressure, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and the safe disposal of contaminated materials. Attempting this yourself risks cross-contamination and inadequate removal.

Given the potential health risks to your family, I highly recommend you contact a certified professional immediately. Our team at Saniservice is equipped to handle this with UAE-compliant procedures.
