How to safely clean mold and check for wall moisture?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the exterior wall, and I'm worried it's from a small leak we haven't found yet, especially after the recent heavy humidity. What's the best way to clean this safely and who should I call to check for moisture in the walls to make sure it doesn't just come back?

For a patch smaller than a square meter, you can clean it yourself with proper precautions. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then dry it thoroughly. Do not use bleach, as it only lightens the color and doesn't address the root moisture problem.

Given its location on an exterior wall after a humid period, this is almost certainly due to condensation or a hidden leak. The high humidity here, combined with cold spots in walls from constant AC use, creates perfect conditions for mold. Simply cleaning it will not stop it from returning.

You need a professional to identify the moisture source. A reputable inspector will use a thermal imaging camera and a moisture meter to pinpoint condensation issues or leaks within the wall cavity without causing unnecessary damage. This diagnostic step is critical for a permanent solution.

For a confirmed issue like this, a certified mold remediation company should handle both the inspection and the cleaning. They will contain the area to prevent spores from spreading, use HEPA filtration, and remove any affected porous materials like damaged drywall or insulation. The goal is to fix the moisture problem and then clean, in that order. Always ask for a post-remediation verification test to ensure the space is truly clean and the spore count has returned to normal levels.
