How to safely clean mold and find moisture source?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Arabian Ranches. I'm really worried it's spread to our belongings and that the AC might be making it worse. What's the first thing I should do to clean this safely and who should I call to check for the source of the moisture?

First, do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach or other household cleaners, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen the problem. For a small patch like this, a solution of distilled white vinegar can help kill surface mold on non-porous materials. However, since it's on a wall and likely porous, and you're concerned about your belongings, the priority is identifying and stopping the moisture source.

The location on an exterior wall in a villa is a classic sign of a thermal bridge, where the outside heat meets your cooled interior air, causing condensation within the wall cavity. This is a common issue in Dubai's climate. The AC isn't creating the mold, but its cooling effect can contribute to the condensation that feeds it.

Your first call should be to a professional mold inspector who uses thermal imaging and moisture meters. They can non-invasively locate the exact point of moisture intrusion behind the wall, which is crucial. Simply cleaning the visible patch will be ineffective if the hidden moisture remains. They can also assess if the mold has affected the integrity of the drywall or backing material, which may need to be removed.

For your belongings, inspect clothes for visible growth or a musty odor. Washable items should be laundered with a mold-inhibiting additive. A professional restoration company can provide ozone treatment for non-washable items if contamination is confirmed.

Ensure any company you contact provides documented evidence of their findings, like moisture readings and lab analysis (if samples are taken), not just a visual inspection. This verifies the source and scope before any remediation begins.
