How to safely clean mold and prevent humidity in bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been feeling really humid lately, and I just found a patch of black, speckled mold in the corner behind our wardrobe. It’s been worse since the weather got hotter and we’ve been running the AC non-stop. What’s the most effective way to clean this safely and what kind of dehumidifier should I get to stop it coming back for good?

Black mold in Dubai bedrooms often appears due to the high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a microfiber cloth and a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots and can damage porous surfaces like drywall.

After cleaning, the underlying cause must be addressed. The humidity is likely from the AC unit not dehumidifying properly or an airflow blockage. Move the wardrobe at least six inches from the wall to prevent cold dead zones where condensation forms. For dehumidification, a desiccant model is more effective than a refrigerant type in Dubai's climate, as it works better in the high heat and lower cooling loads of air-conditioned spaces. Look for a unit with a capacity of at least 10-12 liters per day for a standard bedroom, with a built-in hygrometer to maintain humidity between 45-55%.

If the mold returns quickly, covers a larger area, or you notice a persistent musty smell, this indicates a deeper issue. In villas, the problem can stem from a poorly insulated external wall or a malfunctioning AC unit that isn't draining correctly. For recurring or large-scale mold, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the moisture source and assess the AC system, as improper remediation can spread spores throughout the home.
