How to safely clean mold and prevent humidity in villa?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I finally checked behind their bedroom wardrobe – there’s a patch of black mold on the wall. We’re in a Jumeirah villa and this is the room closest to the garden, so I’m worried the humidity is getting trapped inside. What’s the best way to clean this safely and what kind of dehumidifier should I get to stop it from coming back?

First, address the moisture source. In Dubai villas, the wall shared with a garden is often cooler from AC, causing condensation when humid outdoor air contacts it. This trapped moisture leads to mold. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation.

For cleaning a small patch, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not dry brush it. Use a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, or a diluted detergent, and scrub the area. Dry it completely immediately after. Bleach is not recommended as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage porous surfaces like drywall.

A dehumidifier is essential for prevention. Given Dubai's high ambient humidity, especially at night, choose a unit with a capacity rated for the room's size. Look for a model with a built-in humidistat and an auto-drain function or large collection tank, as you'll need to empty it frequently. Place it in the room, ideally running it to maintain humidity levels below 60%.

However, the mold you see might be part of a larger issue inside the wall cavity. Persistent health symptoms like nighttime coughing in children are a significant indicator that professional assessment is needed. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find hidden dampness and take air/surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species. This is crucial for determining the correct remediation strategy, as some types require more stringent containment procedures. For a situation involving children's health and a potential structural moisture issue, this diagnostic step is highly recommended.
