How to safely clean mold and prevent its return?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom’s walk-in closet has had this damp, earthy smell since the weather started getting hotter a few weeks ago, and I just found a few small black spots in the corner behind some shoe boxes. We keep the AC running but that room always feels a bit humid. What’s the best way to clean this safely and what can I do to stop it from coming back for good?

Small black spots with a damp smell in a closet are a common issue here, often due to high humidity condensing on cooler surfaces. For a small area (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of water and detergent. Avoid using bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage porous materials.

The key is addressing the moisture source. That room likely has higher humidity because the cooled air isn't circulating properly into the closet. Leave the closet door open to allow conditioned air to flow in. Check that the AC vent in the bedroom isn't blocked and is pointing into the room, not directly at a wall. A small dehumidifier or moisture absorber placed in the closet can help significantly between AC cycles.

For persistent dampness or if the mold covers a larger area, a professional assessment is recommended to identify hidden condensation issues or potential AC drain line problems. They can perform a moisture meter reading on the walls to pinpoint the exact cause. In many cases, rebalancing the AC system or improving insulation on cold water pipes running through the space is necessary for a permanent solution.
