How to safely clean mold from AC leak and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom’s AC unit has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet for a while, and now I’ve spotted a small patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner behind the wardrobe. I’m really worried it’s going to spread, especially with the humidity kicking in. What’s the best way to clean this safely and what can I do to stop the AC leaking and prevent it from coming back?

Black mold growth from an AC leak is a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The immediate priority is to stop the moisture source. You'll need an AC technician to fix the leak, which is often a clogged condensate drain line or a faulty installation.
For a small patch under 1 square foot, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted white vinegar solution. Never use bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality. Dry the area completely with a fan. However, because the mold is behind furniture and the leak has been ongoing, there is a high chance of hidden growth within the wall or under the carpet. In such cases, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find hidden dampness you can't see. To prevent recurrence, ensure the AC leak is fully resolved. Keep the room well-ventilated when possible and maintain your AC unit with regular servicing to prevent future condensate overflow. For villas, managing indoor humidity levels with a dehumidifier can be very effective, especially during the more humid winter months. |
