How to safely clean mold from clothes for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks now, and I’m getting worried. I’ve just pulled out their winter clothes from the storage cupboard under the stairs and found several of our sweaters and jackets covered in black and green fuzzy spots. The cupboard always felt a bit damp, but I didn't think much of it until now. What's the safest and most effective way to clean this mold to protect my family?

Do not attempt to clean heavily mold-infested clothes, especially for children, without first assessing the source and type of mold. The fuzzy spots you describe indicate active growth, likely due to the damp, stagnant conditions in that cupboard, a common issue in Dubai's humid climate where condensation builds up in enclosed spaces.
For items of high value, professional textile restoration is the safest option to ensure spores are fully deactivated and removed. For washable items you wish to try salvaging, take them outside to avoid spreading spores indoors. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Brush off the dry mold thoroughly outdoors, then wash the clothes at the highest temperature the fabric allows (ideally 60°C) with a detergent. Adding white vinegar to the wash cycle can help. Sun-drying is highly effective, as UV light is a natural disinfectant. However, cleaning the clothes is only part of the solution. The storage cupboard must be inspected to identify and rectify the moisture source, which could be condensation from a nearby AC duct, a minor leak, or simply poor ventilation. The mold on the surfaces inside the cupboard will also need to be professionally remediated to prevent recurrence and stop spores from contaminating your home's air, which is likely contributing to the coughing. Given the health symptoms and visible growth, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the extent of the issue and ensure it is resolved safely. |
