How to safely clean mold from kids' damp bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I’m worried it’s from the black spots I just found behind their bedroom wardrobe. We live in a villa in Mirdif, and it’s been so humid the last few weeks that the walls feel damp. What’s the safest way to clean this myself without making their allergies worse?

The damp walls and black spots behind the wardrobe are classic signs of a humidity-related mould issue, very common in Dubai villas during humid periods. The safest approach is to address both the immediate growth and the underlying moisture problem to prevent it from returning.
For a small, contained area you've discovered, you can clean it yourself carefully. First, ensure your children are not in the room during the process. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water; vinegar is effective against many mould types and is less irritating than bleach. Gently scrub the area with a stiff brush dipped in the solution. Avoid oversaturating the wall, as adding moisture fuels more mould growth. Afterwards, use a dry cloth to wipe the area and allow it to air dry completely. However, simply cleaning the visible spots may not be sufficient. The mould behind the wardrobe suggests a persistent humidity issue, likely from condensation or a minor leak. To prevent recurrence, you must identify and control the moisture source. Improve ventilation in the room by using a dehumidifier, especially at night, and ensure your AC is functioning correctly, as it is your primary tool for controlling indoor humidity year-round. Move the wardrobe slightly away from the wall to allow air to circulate. If the coughing persists after cleaning, the mould may be more extensive inside the wall cavity or the AC system, which can continuously seed spores into the air. In such cases, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling is recommended to identify the species and full extent of the contamination, which is crucial for determining the right remediation approach for your family's health. |
