How to safely clean mold from kids' room wall?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I finally pulled out their wooden wardrobe in the bedroom to check behind it and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading on the wall, probably from a slow AC leak. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and the humidity has been awful lately. What’s the safest way to clean this immediately to protect my family, and should I call a professional company here in Dubai to test it?

First, ventilate the room immediately. Open windows and doors to reduce airborne spore concentration and move your children to another area. Do not attempt to dry-scrub or vacuum the mold, as this will aerosolize the spores and make the air quality worse.
For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself with caution. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Mix a solution of one part household bleach to four parts water. Apply it to the moldy area with a spray bottle, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush and wipe clean with a damp cloth. Dispose of all cleaning materials afterwards. The wall must be completely dried to prevent regrowth; a dehumidifier or fan is essential, which is challenging given Dubai's current high humidity. Given this is in your children's bedroom and the mold is extensive ("huge patch") and linked to a persistent AC leak, professional assessment is strongly advised. The black coloration could indicate Stachybotrys or other species, but only laboratory analysis can confirm the type. More critically, the moisture source must be identified and repaired; otherwise, the mold will return quickly. In Dubai, remediation companies should follow DM guidelines and provide a detailed scope of work. A reputable provider will not just clean the visible mold but will conduct a moisture survey to find the full extent of the problem, contain the area to prevent cross-contamination, and most importantly, fix the underlying AC leak. They should also be able to provide before-and-after air quality test results from an accredited lab to verify the space is safe. For your peace of mind, given the health symptoms, this is the recommended course of action. |
