How to safely clean mold from my kids' bedroom wall?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold, as I keep finding these small black spots along the bottom of the wall in their bedroom, right behind the headboard. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, especially after the recent humidity. What's the safest way to clean this myself to prevent it from coming back, or should I call a professional company here in Dubai?

Small black spots behind furniture in a humid climate like Dubai are a common sign of surface mold, often caused by condensation and lack of air circulation. For a small area, you can clean it yourself safely.

First, keep your children out of the room during the process. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Lightly mist the area and scrub gently with a microfiber cloth to remove the visible growth. Avoid using bleach, as it can damage paint and only whitens the mold without addressing the root cause. After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry. Improve air circulation by moving the headboard away from the wall and regularly running a dehumidifier or your AC, which is crucial for managing Dubai's indoor humidity.

However, if the mold returns quickly after cleaning, covers an area larger than a square meter, or you notice a persistent musty smell, the issue is likely more serious. This suggests a moisture problem within the wall itself that DIY cleaning cannot fix. In these cases, and especially given the health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the hidden moisture source and assess the full extent. A proper inspection includes moisture meters and often air or surface sampling sent to a microbiology lab to identify the specific mold types present, which is vital for determining the correct remediation approach and ensuring your children's health is protected.
