How to safely clean mold from shoes and bag?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom closet has been leaking a bit, and now I’m finding fuzzy black spots on some of my shoes and a leather bag. It’s been humid lately and I’m worried it’s mold. What’s the safest and most effective way to clean this to protect our health and stop it from coming back?

Those fuzzy black spots are almost certainly mold, given the AC leak and Dubai's high humidity. The safest approach depends on the material. For non-porous items like the leather bag, you can clean it yourself with caution. For porous materials like many shoes, especially fabric-lined ones, professional cleaning is often the only way to ensure the mold is fully removed.

Start by moving the affected items away from the leak and into a well-ventilated area, ideally with lower humidity. Wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid inhaling spores or getting them on your skin. For the leather bag, use a soft cloth slightly dampened with a mixture of one part white vinegar to one part water. Gently wipe the mold away, then follow with a clean, dry cloth. Never soak the leather. Allow it to air dry completely away from direct sunlight, which can cause cracking.

For shoes, the method depends on the material. Surface mold on leather can be treated similarly to the bag. However, if the mold has penetrated into the inner fabric or insulation, household cleaning will likely only remove surface growth, not the root structure. This is a common issue with the condensation from AC units.

The most critical step is to address the source. Have an HVAC technician repair the AC leak immediately. Then, use a dehumidifier in that closet or ensure the AC is running sufficiently to keep humidity levels below 60%, which inhibits mold growth. Simply cleaning the items without fixing the moisture problem will result in the mold returning quickly.

If the affected area is larger than one square foot, the items are valuable, or you or family members have respiratory sensitivities, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify the mold species and use HEPA-filtered equipment to clean the items and area properly, preventing further spread. In many cases, remediation companies can provide a post-cleaning verification to confirm the spores have been removed.
