How to safely clean mold in a humid kids' bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

The kids' bedrooms in our villa in Jumeirah have started to feel really damp, and my youngest has been sneezing non-stop since the weather changed last week. I just pulled a plastic storage box out from under his bed and found the bottom covered in black spots, and the whole corner of the room smells like wet socks. Is this mold from the humidity, and what’s the safest way to clean it without making my son’s allergies worse?

Based on your description, that's almost certainly a mold colony, and the dampness plus the musty odor are classic indicators. In Dubai's high humidity, especially after the recent weather shift, condensation and dampness in AC-cooled rooms are a prime cause.
First, safety is critical. Do not attempt to clean this yourself if the area is larger than a square foot. Disturbing it will aerosolize the spores, which will drastically worsen your son's allergic reaction and potentially spread the problem. For a small area on a non-porous surface like that plastic box, you can carefully wipe it down with a solution of warm water and detergent, but wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, the real concern is the source. The mold on the box is a symptom; the moisture is the problem. That "wet sock" smell suggests it's likely in the carpet, the underlay, or even the wall behind the skirting board. In a villa in Jumeirah, this could stem from a small AC condensate leak, rising damp, or insufficient ventilation. For a child's bedroom, professional assessment is strongly advised. We need to identify and rectify the water source first, then conduct a proper inspection, often with moisture meters and thermal imaging, to see the full extent. Remediation involves containment of the area, HEPA filtration to capture spores, and safe removal of contaminated porous materials. DIY attempts with bleach are ineffective and can be harmful, releasing harsh chemicals. To properly diagnose the source and ensure it's removed safely for your family, please give us a call for an inspection. Call 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 or email hello@saniservice.com. |
