How to safely clean moldy wardrobe and save clothes?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed these dark, splotchy patches spreading on the back wall of the wardrobe where we store our winter clothes. It's been extra humid lately and that room always feels a bit damp. I'm really worried it's black mold and that it's ruined our stuff. What's the most effective way to clean this ourselves, and is it safe to keep the clothes that were in there?

The dark splotches are likely mold, a common issue in Dubai's humid climate, especially in enclosed spaces like wardrobes on exterior walls where condensation can form. The first step is to identify the extent. For a small area (under one square meter), you can often manage it yourself.

Begin by wearing an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection to avoid spore exposure. Isolate the area by closing the door to the room. Carefully remove all clothing and items from the wardrobe. For the walls, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mix (one part bleach to four parts water) can be effective. Scrub the affected surface thoroughly, but avoid over-saturating the drywall. Allow the area to dry completely using a fan or dehumidifier; this is critical in our humidity.

For the clothes, do not simply wash them in a regular cycle. Mold spores will contaminate your machine. For washable fabrics, soak them in a solution of hot water and baking soda or a specific mold-killing laundry additive first. Then, wash them at the highest temperature the fabric allows. Dry them completely in direct sunlight if possible. For dry-clean-only items, inform the cleaner about the mold issue beforehand.

If the mold covers a larger area, has penetrated the drywall, or returns quickly after cleaning, professional assessment is recommended. Remediation experts can determine the moisture source—often a small leak or insulation issue in the villa's exterior wall—and perform cleaning with HEPA filtration to capture all spores. In many cases, clothes can be saved with proper treatment.
