How to safely handle black mold in closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It must have been growing since the weather got more humid a few months ago. I’m really worried it’s spread to the clothes and the wall behind the rack. What’s the best way to handle this safely and who should I call to check it properly, a cleaning company or a specialist?

First, avoid disturbing the patch. Do not wipe or spray it with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and spread them further. The humidity in Dubai, especially during the summer and transition months, creates ideal conditions for mold in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like closets on exterior walls.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a solution of detergent and water, scrubbing gently. Dry the area immediately and completely with a fan. However, since you suspect it's behind the clothes and the wall, professional assessment is strongly recommended. Mold can penetrate porous materials like drywall and fabric, requiring more than surface cleaning.

You should call a specialist, not a general cleaning company. Look for a company that offers mold inspection and testing, as they can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the source of the moisture—often condensation from AC ducts or a small leak—and take air or surface samples for lab analysis to identify the species. This diagnostic step is critical; it determines the actual health risk and the required remediation scope. In the UAE, reputable remediation firms follow standards like the IICRC S520, which outlines proper containment and removal procedures to prevent cross-contamination.

For your clothes, avoid shaking them out inside. Sunlight is a powerful natural disinfectant; laying them in direct sun for several hours can help. For valuable items, professional textile cleaning may be necessary. The key to preventing recurrence is controlling humidity. Consider using a dehumidifier or silica gel desiccant packs in the closet and ensuring your AC is serviced regularly to manage indoor humidity levels.
