How to safely remove and prevent bathroom mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It’s on the interior wall that backs up to the ensuite bathroom, and the room always feels a bit damp after a shower. I’m worried it’s spreading behind the clothes. What is the most effective way to clean this safely and prevent it from coming back for good, given our humid climate?

The dampness from your bathroom is likely creating condensation on that interior wall, a very common issue in Dubai's climate. For a patch you've just noticed, start by addressing the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it's actually venting outside, not just into the ceiling void.

To clean the visible mold, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Avoid bleach; it can damage paint and only lightens the stain. Instead, use a dedicated mold cleaner or a solution of white vinegar or diluted hydrogen peroxide. Scrub the area thoroughly, let it dry completely, then repaint with a mold-inhibiting primer and paint.

However, if the mold has spread behind clothes or into the drywall, surface cleaning won't be sufficient. The wall cavity may be affected. In such cases, professional inspection is advised to assess the extent and identify any hidden water intrusion. They can perform moisture mapping and air quality tests to determine if remediation is needed. For persistent problems linked to high humidity, a dehumidifier or improving the room's ventilation can help maintain a drier environment and prevent recurrence.
