How to safely remove and prevent black mold in closet?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’ve just found a patch of black, speckled stuff in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It’s a wall that faces the outside of our villa in Jumeirah, and it feels slightly damp. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this after the recent humid weather. What’s the most effective way to clean this safely and prevent it from coming back for good?

Based on your description of a damp exterior wall in Jumeirah with black, speckled growth, you are likely dealing with a mold colony, potentially including the common type Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as black mold). The recent humidity is a key indicator, as Dubai's climate, especially during summer, creates ideal conditions for mold growth when combined with cold spots on walls from year-round AC, leading to condensation.

For safe removal, do not attempt to dry scrub or use bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and exacerbate health issues like the coughing you've observed. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and seal it with plastic sheeting if possible. Wearing an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves, gently mist the patch with a diluted detergent solution (e.g., 1 part detergent to 10 parts water) to suppress spores before wiping it away with a disposable cloth. All contaminated materials, including the cloth and any moldy shoes or boxes, should be sealed in a plastic bag for disposal.

However, wiping the visible growth is only addressing the symptom. The critical issue is the moisture source. The dampness on an exterior wall suggests a possible interstitial condensation problem or a minor leak. Permanent prevention requires identifying and rectifying this moisture intrusion, which often necessitates a professional inspection with tools like thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters.

For a lasting solution and to ensure the air quality in your villa is safe for your family, I strongly recommend a professional assessment. Our certified team at Saniservice can conduct a comprehensive inspection to identify the root cause, provide a protocol for safe remediation, and offer solutions like improved ventilation or dehumidification to prevent recurrence.
