How to safely remove and prevent black mold in closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our villa in Jumeirah has these dark spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, and I’m worried it’s black mold. The wall feels a bit damp, and it’s definitely gotten worse since the humidity really kicked in a few weeks ago. We run the AC constantly, but I think the lack of air circulation in the closed closet is the problem. What’s the best way to clean this safely and prevent it from coming back for good?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth driven by Dubai's high humidity and condensation issues, exacerbated by poor air circulation in an enclosed space. The dampness and dark spots are strong indicators of a mold colony, possibly Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) or more commonly, Cladosporium or Aspergillus.
For a small, contained area, safety is paramount. Do not dry brush the mold, as this aerosolizes spores. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and sealing the gap with tape and plastic sheeting if possible. Clean the surface with a HEPA vacuum to capture loose spores, then scrub with a solution of detergent and water. After cleaning, disinfect with a solution of one part household bleach to ten parts water, ensuring the area is well-ventilated. Allow it to dry completely. However, surface cleaning is a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue is not resolved. The constant AC use creates a significant temperature differential between the cooled room and the warmer wall, leading to condensation—this is the root cause. To prevent recurrence, you must increase air circulation. Leave the closet doors ajar, install a battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside, and ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly to maintain proper humidity control, ideally between 30-50%. For a confirmed identification and to ensure the mold has not penetrated the wallboard or underlying structure, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air quality tests to assess the full extent of the problem and provide a remediation protocol that complies with Dubai Municipality's health and safety standards.
