How to safely remove and prevent black wall mold?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles appearing on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. The room has an AC vent but we keep it pretty cool, and I'm worried it's the humidity from last month's storms. What's the best way to get rid of this safely and, more importantly, how can I stop it from coming back once we move the furniture?

Based on your description of black speckles appearing behind a wardrobe, you are likely dealing with a classic case of surface mold growth due to localized condensation and lack of air circulation. This is extremely common in Dubai, where our high external humidity, especially after rainstorms, clashes with cool, air-conditioned interiors, creating ideal conditions for mold on cold spots and behind large furniture.
For safe removal, the affected area must be isolated. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Move the wardrobe away from the wall. For a small area, a solution of diluted detergent (not bleach, as it does not kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality) can be used to wipe the surface. The wall must then be thoroughly dried. However, this only addresses the visible growth. The underlying moisture issue must be resolved to prevent recurrence. Prevention is absolutely key. Once the wall is clean and completely dry, reposition the furniture to leave a minimum 2-inch gap between it and the wall to allow air from the AC vent to circulate. Ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly and that its drainage system is not blocked, as a faulty AC is a primary source of hidden moisture. Consider using a hygrometer to monitor bedroom humidity levels, aiming to keep them below 60%. For a proper assessment and to ensure the mold has not penetrated the wallboard or underlying structure, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden moisture and conduct air quality tests to determine spore count and species. Our certified remediation teams use EPA-approved antimicrobial solutions and containment procedures to ensure safe, complete removal in compliance with Dubai Municipality's public health and environmental standards.
