How to safely remove and prevent carpet mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots forming along the edges of the carpet in our master bedroom, right where the wall meets the floor. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it’s mold starting to grow. What’s the best way to clean this safely and prevent it from coming back, especially with the AC running all the time?

Black spots at the carpet edge are a common sign of mold growth in Dubai, often caused by condensation where the cold wall meets the humid room air. For a small area, you can clean it yourself safely. First, wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid inhaling spores. Use a stiff brush to scrub the visible mold off the carpet fibers and the baseboard. Then, apply a mixture of one part white vinegar to one part water; vinegar is effective and less harsh than bleach. Let it sit for an hour before blotting it dry.

To prevent it from returning, you must address the moisture source. This is almost always due to the AC's temperature being set too low, causing the cold wall to sweat in our high humidity. Try raising your AC temperature by a degree or two to reduce this drastic temperature differential. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and its drain line is clear, as a clog can cause excess humidity. Improve air circulation in the room by not pushing furniture directly against the exterior walls.

If the affected area is larger than one square meter, the mold has penetrated the carpet underpad, or it returns despite your efforts, professional assessment is recommended. Remediation involves removing the carpet section, treating the subfloor, and verifying the spore count is safe with post-remediation testing, which a local microbiology lab can provide. In severe cases, this is needed to protect your indoor air quality.
