How to safely remove and prevent ceiling mold under AC vent?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled spots appearing along the edges of the bedroom ceiling. It’s right under the AC vent and the room always feels more humid than the rest of the house. What’s the best way to clean this safely and, more importantly, how can we stop it from coming back since our AC is running constantly?

Black mold growth under AC vents is common in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation. The first step is to identify the moisture source—it's often a combination of humid air infiltration and a cold surface causing condensation.

For safe removal on a non-porous surface like a painted ceiling, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Gently wipe the area with a cloth dampened with a diluted detergent solution or a vinegar-water mix. Avoid abrasive scrubbing, which can release spores. Do not use bleach, as it only surface-bleaches and does not address the root cause.

To prevent recurrence, you must control humidity. Ensure your AC unit is set to maintain indoor humidity levels below 60%, ideally between 45-55%. Check that the AC drain line is not clogged and is properly discharging condensate. Improve room ventilation; even briefly opening windows when outdoor humidity is lower can help. For a persistent issue, the AC unit itself may need a professional inspection and cleaning to ensure it is dehumidifying correctly and its seals are intact.

In many cases, the underlying cause requires a professional assessment to diagnose the exact condensation point and assess for any hidden growth within the ductwork. A lab test can confirm the mold type, which is recommended if there are health concerns or the growth is extensive.
