How to safely remove bathroom mold and check for hidden mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold I just found behind the toilet in our master bathroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but it's pretty bad and looks black and fuzzy. It seems to have spread to the base of the wall and the grout. What's the best way to get rid of this safely and permanently, and should I get a professional to check for hidden mold in the walls?

Black fuzzy mold in bathrooms is common here due to our high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation. For your family's health, especially with kids coughing, safe removal is critical.

For a patch that size and type, do not scrub it. Disturbing it releases spores. Start by mixing a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle. Lightly mist the area to dampen the spores and prevent them from becoming airborne. Wipe it away with a disposable cloth, place everything in a sealed bag, and dispose of it immediately.

However, the fact it's behind the toilet and spreading to the wall base strongly suggests a hidden moisture source, like a slow leak from the toilet seal or plumbing within the wall. Surface cleaning will only be temporary if that leak isn't found and fixed.

Given the description and your children's symptoms, a professional inspection is highly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to non-invasively check inside wall cavities for hidden growth and the source of water. In Dubai villas, this often traces back to AC condensate drain leaks or faulty bathroom waterproofing. A proper remediation plan addresses the root cause first, then safely contains and removes the contaminated material to prevent cross-contamination. A post-remediation verification test, like a surface sample sent to a microbiology lab, is the only way to confirm it was resolved effectively.
