How to safely remove bathroom mold and prevent spreading?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling. It’s been extra humid lately and I think the bathroom ventilation isn't strong enough. What’s the most effective way to safely remove this myself, and should I be worried about it spreading behind the walls?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is common due to the high humidity and condensation from air conditioning. For a small patch where the wall meets the ceiling, you can safely remove it yourself. Wear a mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a dedicated mold remover or a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during cleaning.
Preventing its return is key. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If the fan is weak, as you suspect, consider upgrading it to a higher-capacity model. Wiping down wet walls and surfaces after use helps tremendously. In many Dubai apartments, the constant cooling of AC units creates a significant temperature differential with the humid outdoor air, leading to condensation that fuels mold growth in hidden spots like behind walls. If the mold patch is larger than one square meter, has a persistent musty odor, or reappears quickly after cleaning, it may indicate a deeper issue within the wall cavity. In such cases, a professional inspection with a borescope can determine if there is hidden growth. For rentals, Dubai Municipality's Public Health & Safety Department guidelines often hold the building management responsible for addressing structural moisture issues leading to mold. |
