How to safely remove black mold and check family health?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because that wall faces Deira Creek and the humidity has been so intense lately. What is the safest and most effective way to clean this myself to prevent it from coming back, and should I be taking my family to a doctor for a check-up?

Black mold exposure can cause respiratory irritation, especially in children. Given the persistent cough, a doctor's visit is prudent to rule out other causes and discuss potential mold sensitivity. Be sure to mention the mold discovery to them.
For safe removal, first address the humidity source. That wall likely has condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the humid exterior, a common issue in Deira. Improve ventilation around the wardrobe and consider a dehumidifier for that room. To clean, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Never dry-brush mold, as this aerosolizes spores. Contain the area with plastic sheeting. Scrub the affected surface with a detergent solution, then disinfect with a diluted white vinegar or a solution specifically labeled for mold. Allow the area to dry completely. Porous materials like drywall or insulation often cannot be adequately cleaned and should be removed and replaced. This method is for small, isolated patches (under 1 square meter). For anything larger, or if the mold returns quickly, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess hidden growth within the wall cavity. Recurrence is very likely unless the underlying moisture issue is professionally diagnosed and resolved. |
