How to safely remove black mold and check for more??« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of the building. I’m worried it’s been there a while and might be why my allergies have been so bad lately. What’s the best way to get rid of this safely and who should I call to check for a bigger problem behind the wall?

Black mold on an exterior wall in Dubai often indicates a condensation issue from the constant AC use or a small leak. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a diluted vinegar solution or a specialized mold remover. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area, dry it completely, and discard any contaminated porous materials like cardboard boxes.

Given its location on an exterior wall and your allergy symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg; moisture can penetrate wall cavities, leading to a larger, hidden problem. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside the wall for further growth and identify the exact moisture source—be it condensation, a leak, or capillary action from the outside.

In Dubai, remediation companies should follow standards like the IICRC S520 for mold remediation. Look for a provider that offers a clear process: containment of the area, HEPA-filtered air scrubbers to capture spores, safe removal of contaminated materials, and—crucially—post-remediation verification (PRV) to confirm the space is clean. This final clearance test, often involving air and surface sampling, is your proof that the issue was resolved properly and not just painted over.
