How to safely remove black mold and find its source?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It must have been hidden there for a while, and I'm worried it's from a hidden AC leak or the recent humidity. What's the most effective way to remove this safely and who should I call for a proper inspection to find the source?

First, do not disturb the mold by wiping or spraying it yourself, as this can release a large number of spores into your bedroom air. The priority is to identify and stop the moisture source, which in Jumeirah is often a small, hidden AC condensation leak or persistent humidity trapped behind furniture.

For a patch larger than a square foot, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to locate the exact source. They will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to check the wall and AC drainage line without causing damage. In Dubai’s climate, the source is often a blocked condensate drain line from your AC unit, a common issue with year-round usage.

Safe removal for a resident involves sealing off the area with plastic sheeting, wearing an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles, and cleaning the affected surface with a detergent solution. However, this only addresses the visible growth and not the spores within the wall or the root moisture problem.

For proper remediation, call a company that specializes in mold diagnostics and removal, not a general handyman. A credible provider will first conduct a thorough inspection to find the source, contain the area to prevent cross-contamination, remove the moldy materials (like contaminated drywall or insulation), HEPA-vacuum the area, and finally treat it with antimicrobial solutions. They should also be able to provide a post-remediation verification test, often through a third-party lab, to confirm the space is safe. This science-driven approach is the only way to ensure it does not return.
