How to safely remove black mold and fix the cause?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Jumeirah. I'm really worried about it spreading and what it might be doing to our health. What's the best way to get rid of this safely and who should I call to fix the cause for good?

First, address the moisture source. That wall likely has a thermal bridge or minor leak allowing condensation in Dubai's humid climate. Mold grows on moisture, not just dirt. Until fixed, it will return.
For removal, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and covering the opening with plastic sheeting. Mix a solution of one part detergent and three parts water. Scrub the mold patch thoroughly. Avoid bleach; it doesn't kill mold spores and can damage porous surfaces like drywall. Dry the area completely with a fan afterward. However, since it's behind items and on an exterior wall, this suggests an ongoing issue. Scrubbing surface mold doesn't address spores or hidden growth inside the wall cavity. For a proper fix, you need a professional assessment. Call a certified mold inspector or a remediation company with their own microbiology lab. They should conduct a visual inspection and likely air and surface sampling to identify the species and the full extent. The root cause—be it a leak, insulation failure, or AC condensate drain issue—must be repaired. In villas, this often requires a building contractor or AC technician alongside the mold specialist. The Dubai Municipality and DHA have guidelines for indoor air quality, and reputable providers follow these standards. They will provide a verification report post-remediation to confirm the space is safe. This is the only way to ensure it doesn't return and that the removal was done without spreading spores throughout your home. |
