How to safely remove black mold and prevent humidity in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

Our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been feeling really humid lately, and we just discovered a patch of black mold behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's been extra muggy since the last round of heavy fog, and we keep the AC running most of the time. What's the most effective way to clean this safely and what kind of dehumidifier should we get to stop it from coming back?

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to four parts water. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area, let it sit for an hour, then wipe it dry. Never use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can worsen the problem by adding moisture.
In Dubai's climate, the root cause is almost always excess humidity. Your AC should handle it, but if it's running constantly without lowering humidity, it may be undersized, set to a too-cold temperature causing condensation, or need servicing. A dehumidifier is a good interim solution; for a standard bedroom, a unit with a 10-12 litre per day capacity is typically sufficient. Place it in the most humid area. However, since the mould is behind furniture, there is a high chance of a larger hidden problem within the wall or from a condensation leak. For anything larger than a small patch, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the moisture source and assess the full extent. The DHA has guidelines for indoor air quality, and improper remediation can spread spores. A proper assessment often includes moisture mapping and, if needed, lab analysis to confirm the mould type, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. |
