How to safely remove black mold and prevent it returning?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our villa in Arabian Ranches has felt really humid lately, and we just found a patch of black, speckled mold in the corner behind the wardrobe. We run the AC constantly but this last winter was so rainy and I’m worried the moisture got trapped in there. What’s the best way to clean this safely and what can we do to stop it from coming back for good?

The black, speckled mold is likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, both common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from AC systems. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Ensure the room is well-ventilated during and after cleaning.
To prevent recurrence, you must control the moisture. This corner behind the wardrobe is a classic problem spot where humid air gets trapped, condenses on the cooler wall, and creates a microclimate perfect for mold. Move the wardrobe a few inches away from the wall to improve air circulation. Use a dehumidifier in the bedroom, especially after the recent rainy winters which significantly increase ambient moisture levels indoors. Running your AC constantly helps, but ensure it’s set to a consistently cool temperature to properly remove humidity from the air, and check that the condensate drain line is not blocked. For villas in areas like Arabian Ranches, an infrared thermal imaging inspection can identify hidden cold spots and condensation within walls that you cannot see. If the mold returns after cleaning or covers a larger area, a professional inspection with lab analysis is recommended to identify the species and the full extent of the moisture issue, as per Dubai Municipality guidelines for healthy housing. |
