How to safely remove black mold and treat cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's been growing in the corners of our master bathroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it spreading behind the toilet and along the base of the shower where the grout is cracked. It's gotten worse since the humidity kicked in last month. What's the best way to get rid of it safely and permanently, and should I be taking them to a doctor for these respiratory symptoms?

Black mold in bathrooms is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity, and it can absolutely cause respiratory irritation like coughing, especially in children. For their current symptoms, a visit to a pediatrician is recommended to rule out other causes and get appropriate treatment.
For safe removal, start by addressing the moisture source. Ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is working properly and run it during and for at least 30 minutes after showers. Wipe down wet surfaces and fix any leaking fixtures. For the visible growth on non-porous surfaces, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective. Apply, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, scrub, and rinse. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores. However, the cracked grout you mentioned is a significant problem. Mold will have penetrated deep into the porous material, making surface cleaning only a temporary fix. The permanent solution involves professionally removing and replacing the compromised grout and sealant after the area is completely dry. Given that the mold has spread and is linked to health symptoms, a professional inspection is prudent. They can assess the full extent, identify the species (as "black mold" can be several types with varying health impacts), and verify that your DIY removal was successful through post-remediation testing. This is the best way to ensure it's gone for good and your indoor air is safe. |
