How to safely remove black mold and who to call?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels slightly damp. I'm really worried about it spreading. What's the best way to get rid of this safely and who should I call to check for a bigger problem?

Black mold on an exterior wall that feels damp indicates a moisture issue, likely from condensation or a small leak. In Dubai's climate, this is common on walls where cool indoor air meets the hot exterior, creating a perfect environment for mold.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water). Dry the area completely with a fan. Discard any contaminated porous materials like cardboard boxes.

However, since the wall is damp, cleaning alone is a temporary fix. The underlying moisture problem must be addressed to prevent immediate regrowth. You should call a professional mold inspector to identify the source. The dampness could be from a leaking pipe within the wall, faulty external waterproofing, or severe interstitial condensation.

A proper inspection involves moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the water source without destructive investigation. If the moisture is widespread, a remediation company that follows IICRC standards should handle the removal. They will contain the area, use HEPA filtration, and verify the cleanup with post-remediation testing. For serious cases, always request a verification report from an independent third party to ensure the job is done correctly.
