How to safely remove black mold behind wardrobe myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It must have been hidden there for a while, and with the humidity lately, it’s gotten much worse. What’s the safest and most effective way for me to clean this myself, or is this a job where I absolutely need to call a professional company?

Black mold behind furniture in a Dubai villa is a common issue due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. For a small patch (under one square foot/30cm x 30cm), you can attempt to clean it yourself with precautions.
First, contain the area. Seal the room from the rest of the house and close the AC vent. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle—avoid bleach as it only removes the colour and can push spores into the air. Lightly mist the moldy area, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry the wall thoroughly with a fan. Discard all cleaning materials. However, if the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odour, has caused structural damage to the wall, or if anyone in the household has respiratory issues, this is a job for professionals. The mold behind the wardrobe is likely just the visible part; the root cause is moisture trapped within the wall cavity. A professional inspection, often including moisture meters and borescopes, is needed to find the source and prevent rapid regrowth. In many cases, hidden mold in AC ducts also needs to be addressed. A certified remediation company will use containment barriers, HEPA filtration, and proper antimicrobials to treat it safely. |
