How to safely remove black mold from bathroom shower?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I’ve just spotted patches of black mold in the corners of our master bathroom shower. We’re in a villa in Jumeirah and the humidity has been brutal lately, especially with everyone using hot water. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of this myself without exposing my family to harsh chemicals?

Black mold in bathroom showers is extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from hot showers. For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot), you can safely handle it yourself.

Wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid inhaling spores. Ventilate the area by opening a window and running the bathroom exhaust fan. A simple and effective non-chemical solution is to spray undiluted white vinegar directly onto the mold, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse. For persistent spots, a paste of baking soda and water can be used for extra scrubbing power. The key is to address the moisture source; after cleaning, consistently use your exhaust fan during and for 30 minutes after showers and wipe down wet shower walls to reduce humidity.

If the mold covers a larger area, keeps returning quickly despite cleaning, or is in the grout behind tiles, the growth is likely deeper. In these cases, or if family members are experiencing respiratory issues like coughing, a professional inspection is advised to assess the extent and identify hidden moisture problems, as improper handling can spread spores throughout the home.
