How to safely remove black mold from bedroom corner?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It's behind the headboard, so we didn't see it until we moved the bed today. The room has felt unusually damp lately, especially at night. What's the most effective way to get rid of this safely, and should I be calling my building's maintenance or a professional cleaning company?

First, address the moisture source. In Dubai's climate, this is often condensation from AC ducts or a small leak. Check if the AC vent above is dripping or if there's a pipe leak in the void above the ceiling. You must fix this first; otherwise, the mold will return quickly.
For a small patch under one square meter, you can clean it yourself with proper precautions. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Do not dry brush it, as this releases spores. Instead, lightly mist the area with a diluted white vinegar or detergent solution to dampen it and prevent airborne spread, then wipe it away with a disposable cloth. However, given the location (ceiling/wall junction) and the described dampness, this suggests a potential hidden issue within the wall cavity or ceiling void. This is very common here due to condensation on cold AC ducting. Building maintenance should be your first call to investigate and repair any leak or insulation issue from the building side. They are responsible for the structure. After the moisture source is repaired, if the mold growth is extensive or has penetrated porous materials like drywall, professional assessment is recommended. Remediation often requires controlled removal of affected materials to prevent cross-contamination, followed by HEPA vacuuming and wiping of surfaces. In many cases, a post-remediation verification test is the only way to confirm the space has been returned to a normal fungal ecology. |
