How to safely remove black mold from bedroom myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We live in a villa in Al Barsha and I think it’s been growing there since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. What’s the safest and most effective way to remove this myself without risking my family's health?

Black mold in Al Barsha villas is common due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. For a small, contained area (under one square meter) behind a wardrobe, you can attempt removal yourself, but safety is paramount.

First, isolate the area. Keep children and pets out of the room. Open windows for maximum ventilation and wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety goggles. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted bleach solution (check manufacturer guidelines for the surface) in a spray bottle. Lightly mist the moldy area to dampen it and prevent spores from becoming airborne during scrubbing.

Scrub the area with a stiff-bristled brush, then wipe it clean with disposable cloths. Place all used cleaning materials in a sealed plastic bag for disposal. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely within 24-48 hours to prevent regrowth. Use a dehumidifier and fans directed at the wall; this is critical in Dubai's climate.

However, given that the mold is black and your children are already showing respiratory symptoms, this is a sign the situation may be more serious. Mold behind furniture often indicates a larger moisture problem within the wall cavity that you cannot see. DIY cleaning only addresses surface growth, not the root cause or potential hidden contamination.

For health safety and to ensure the problem is fully resolved, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters to find the source of water intrusion and conduct air or swab testing to identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol. This is the most effective way to safeguard your family's health long-term.
