How to safely remove black mold from my villa wall?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Mirdif has been feeling really humid lately, and I just pulled our big wardrobe away from the wall in the master bedroom to find a huge patch of black mold growing behind it. It’s been getting worse ever since that period of heavy rain and humidity we had a few weeks back. What’s the most effective way to deal with this safely, and should I call a professional company or is this something I can handle myself with products from ACE Hardware?

That black mold behind your wardrobe is a classic symptom of Dubai's high humidity, especially after heavy rain when trapped moisture can't evaporate. For a large patch, the most effective and safe approach is professional remediation, as improper handling can spread spores throughout your home.

You can attempt a small area (under one square meter) yourself if no one has respiratory issues. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by closing the door and sealing the gap with tape. Clean with a mixture of detergent and water, scrubbing the surface. Avoid bleach; it only removes the color and can push the mold deeper into porous materials like gypsum board. After cleaning, the wall must be completely dried with fans and a dehumidifier to prevent immediate regrowth.

However, given the villa's construction and the climate, the moisture source is critical. The mold behind the wardrobe is likely due to condensation from the exterior wall, potentially exacerbated by your AC temperature settings. Simply cleaning the visible growth is a temporary fix if the underlying humidity issue isn't resolved. A professional inspection identifies the root cause—like thermal bridging in the wall or inadequate ventilation—to prevent recurrence. For a large patch, a certified company will use containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatments to safely remove it, followed by verification that the spore count has returned to normal levels. This is the only way to ensure it’s truly resolved.
