How to safely remove black mold from shower corner?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It's been incredibly humid lately and I think the bathroom's exhaust fan isn't strong enough. What’s the most effective way to remove this safely, and should I call my building management first or handle it myself?

For a small patch you've just noticed, you can handle this yourself safely. The key is to not just wipe it away but to kill the spores to prevent immediate regrowth. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during the process.

Mix a solution of 80% white vinegar and 20% water in a spray bottle. Vinegar is effective on many common bathroom molds and is less harsh than bleach, which often only bleaches the colour without killing the root. Spray the area thoroughly until it's saturated, let it sit for at least an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and wipe clean. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during and after.

Given the high humidity in Dubai, especially in coastal areas like Marina, the root cause is almost always excess moisture. Your exhaust fan is likely insufficient; it should be strong enough to hold a piece of toilet paper against the vent when running. After cleaning, run the fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wiping down wet surfaces and using a dehumidifier can also help measurably reduce moisture.

You are not typically required to call building management for a small, contained patch like this. However, if the mould is widespread, recurring despite your efforts, or you suspect a leak within the wall or ceiling from another unit, then you must inform them. They are responsible for the building's structure and resolving leaks originating from common areas or adjacent apartments. If the area is larger than one square meter, or if anyone in the household has respiratory issues, a professional inspection is advised to assess the extent and identify the exact moisture source.
