How to safely remove black mold from wall?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. I think it's from when we had that really humid spell a couple of months ago, but our windows are always closed with the AC on. What's the best way to get rid of this safely without damaging the paint, and should I be worried about our health?

Black mold on walls in Dubai is almost always due to condensation from air conditioning, especially during humid spells. The cold wall behind your sofa meets the warm room air, creating a perfect, damp environment for mold, even with windows closed.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not just wipe it, as this can spread spores. Use a mild detergent solution or a mix of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Apply it with a cloth, gently dabbing the area. Avoid abrasive scrubbing to protect the paint, and never use bleach as it can worsen the problem by releasing toxic fumes and only bleaches the mold without killing the roots. However, the visible spots are just the surface. The root structure is often deeper within the wall. DIY cleaning frequently removes the stain but not the underlying colony, leading to rapid regrowth within weeks. For health, the primary concern is respiratory irritation—worsened allergies, coughing, or congestion, particularly for children or those with asthma. The risk depends on the species, which requires lab analysis to confirm. The most effective, long-term solution requires addressing the moisture source. This usually means improving insulation behind the sofa to prevent the cold wall surface, increasing air circulation in that area, and possibly having your AC serviced to ensure it is effectively dehumidifying your home. For persistent or large areas (over one square meter), a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the exact mold type and moisture cause. Reputable companies use thermal imaging to find condensation points and provide documented lab results to verify the root cause is solved, not just the visible symptom. |
