How to safely remove black mold in humid climates?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading on the wall behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. It's been incredibly humid lately and I'm worried it's been growing there for a while unseen. What's the most effective way to get rid of this safely without it just coming back?

Black mold growth behind furniture is common in Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer months when AC units work overtime and can create condensation points on cooler walls. The first step is to identify and stop the moisture source—this is almost always a leak or condensation from the AC. Simply wiping it away will not prevent its return.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a solution of detergent and water, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Do not use bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage porous surfaces like drywall. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely with a fan. However, since the mold is behind a wardrobe and has likely been growing unseen, the extent of the problem might be greater.

In humid climates, the wall cavity itself may be affected. The most effective long-term solution requires a professional inspection to pinpoint the exact moisture source—often a leaking AC condensate drain line or insufficient insulation causing thermal bridging and condensation. Remediation involves removing contaminated porous materials like drywall, treating the area with EPA-approved antimicrobial solutions, and implementing humidity control measures. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide culture-based testing to confirm the mold type and verify it is gone post-remediation. For a recurring issue in a bedroom, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to ensure it is resolved safely.
