How to safely remove black mold in humid Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found in the corner of their bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it behind the wardrobe after I moved it to clean. The wall feels damp and it's definitely worse on the side facing the outside of the building. What's the best way to treat this safely and prevent it from coming back in our Jumeirah villa's humidity?

Black mold in Dubai villas often appears on exterior walls where condensation forms due to the high humidity and constant AC use. The damp wall behind the wardrobe is a classic sign of this thermal bridging. The first step is to address the moisture source; this is non-negotiable for permanent removal.
For a small area (less than one square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Isolate the area with plastic sheeting. Scrub the mold off with a detergent solution, but never use bleach as it can worsen the problem by releasing spores and not addressing the root cause. Dry the area completely with fans immediately after cleaning. However, given the wall feels damp, the mold is likely more extensive inside the wall cavity. DIY cleaning will only remove the surface growth, and it will return. The persistent cough in your children is a significant indicator that professional assessment is needed. A proper inspection, often involving a moisture meter and thermal camera, can find the hidden extent and the precise cause of the dampness—whether it's a minor condensation issue or a more serious leak. For lasting results, a remediation company with their own microbiology lab can identify the mold species to confirm the risk level and verify the cleanup was successful through post-remediation testing. They will fix the moisture intrusion, remove contaminated materials safely, and treat the area with EPA-approved biocides. To prevent recurrence, ensure the room is well-ventilated, keep the AC well-maintained to reduce humidity, and consider a dehumidifier. Avoid placing large furniture tightly against exterior walls, as this traps moist air. |
