How to safely remove black mold in JVC apartment?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It must have been growing slowly because the room has felt damp for a while, but I only spotted it today while cleaning. The closet is on an exterior wall in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle. What's the most effective way to remove this safely, and should I be worried about it spreading through the AC?

Black mold in a JVC apartment closet is a common issue due to the high humidity and condensation on exterior walls. The first step is to identify and address the moisture source; it's likely condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the hot exterior wall.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Move all items out of the closet. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted detergent. Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not address the root moisture problem.

However, since you've felt dampness for a while, the mold growth behind the boxes could be more extensive than it appears. Mold often spreads behind baseboards and into wall cavities. Professional inspection is recommended to assess the full extent and ensure the wall itself is dry. They use moisture meters and borescopes to see inside walls without unnecessary damage.

Regarding your AC, it is unlikely to be spreading this particular mold growth. The mold is localized due to a specific condensation point on a cold surface. However, your AC system could be contributing to the overall humidity level in the apartment. Ensuring your AC drain line is not blocked and that the unit is functioning correctly can help reduce ambient moisture. A full AC inspection and cleaning can be part of a comprehensive approach to improving your indoor air quality after the closet is remediated.
