How to safely remove black mold near my toddler?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Al Barsha has had a constant condensation problem on the windows since the weather got hotter and we've been blasting the AC. I just pulled my toddler's bed away from the wall to find a patch of black mold hidden behind it, and he's been sneezing a lot lately. What is the absolute safest and most effective way to get this cleaned up without putting my family at risk from the chemicals or the spores?

First off, I'm sorry to hear about this, and it's very smart of you to be thinking about safety first, especially with a toddler in the house. That condensation issue in Al Barsha is a classic Dubai problem with our high humidity and constant AC use creating the perfect storm for mold.

For a patch you've found behind the bed, here's the safest protocol. This is for a small, isolated area (less than 1 square meter). Anything larger, you MUST call a pro.

1. ISOLATE THE AREA. Seal off the room from the rest of the villa. Close the door and put a towel at the base. This is critical to prevent spores from spreading to other areas during cleaning.

2. PROTECT YOURSELF. You need an N95 mask, nitrile gloves, and safety goggles. Do not skip this. Your toddler and family should not be in the house during the cleanup. The spores are the main hazard.

3. VENTILATE. Open the window in that room to allow fresh air to circulate and spores to exit. Keep the AC OFF in that zone to avoid contaminating the entire duct system.

4. CLEANING. Avoid bleach; it's mostly water and can actually feed mold roots inside porous materials. For a non-porous surface like painted drywall, use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide or a simple solution of distilled white vinegar. Lightly mist the area to dampen it (this prevents spores from becoming airborne), then scrub with a microfiber cloth. Immediately seal that cloth in a plastic bag and dispose of it outside.

5. DRY THE AREA. This is the most important step in the UAE. After cleaning, use a fan to thoroughly dry the wall and the space behind the bed. A small dehumidifier would be ideal to pull the moisture out.

However, given that this was hidden and your son is showing symptoms, this is likely part of a larger humidity problem. Mold behind a wall often means mold inside the wall cavity. I strongly, strongly recommend a professional inspection. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to find the true extent of the problem, which is almost always worse than it appears. DIY can often just disturb a much larger colony.
