How to safely remove black mold with kids and asthma?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black mold spots that have appeared in the corners of our master bathroom. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and it’s been getting worse since the weather got really humid a couple of months ago. I'm worried about their health, especially my youngest who has asthma. What's the fastest and safest way to get rid of this mold for good, considering I have little ones around?

Black mold in bathrooms is a common issue in Dubai's humid climate, especially in villas near the coast. For a household with children and asthma, safety is the top priority. The fastest and safest method requires addressing both the visible growth and the underlying moisture problem.

Start by keeping your children out of the bathroom during the entire process. For small, isolated spots, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (one part bleach to ten parts water) can be effective. Apply it to the area, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Always wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection to avoid inhaling spores or exposing your skin. Open a window and run the bathroom exhaust fan during and for at least 30 minutes after cleaning to ensure strong ventilation. This is crucial to prevent spore concentration in the air.

However, if the mold covers an area larger than a square foot, is in the ceiling, or keeps returning despite cleaning, the issue is likely deeper within the walls or under the tiles. In such cases, and especially with a pre-existing asthma condition, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can identify the source of the moisture—often condensation from AC ducts, a hidden leak, or insufficient ventilation—and perform remediation using containment barriers and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination into your home's living spaces. For a permanent solution, controlling humidity with a dehumidifier and ensuring your bathroom's exhaust fan is powerful enough and used during every shower are essential long-term steps.
