How to safely remove black mold with kids in house?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and waking up with stuffy noses for the past month, and I'm starting to panic. I pulled our large wardrobe away from the wall in the master bedroom of our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black mold spreading behind it, probably from the humidity. I think it's been there since that period of heavy dew we had a few weeks back. What's the safest and most effective way to handle this, especially with young children in the house?

First, isolate the area immediately. Move the children to another part of the house and close the door to the affected room. Do not attempt to dry-scrub or vacuum the mold, as this will release a massive number of spores into the air, which your children will breathe in.

Given the size of the patch and the existing health symptoms, a professional inspection and remediation is strongly recommended. The combination of high humidity, condensation from AC units, and porous building materials like plasterboard in Dubai villas allows mold to penetrate deep into the wall cavity, far beyond what’s visible. DIY cleaning with bleach or vinegar only addresses the surface stain, leaving the root colony intact to regrow.

For a situation like this, a proper remediation involves containment of the area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination, followed by the safe removal of affected porous materials. The underlying cause, likely condensation from temperature differentials or a minor leak, must also be identified and fixed to prevent recurrence. This is not a simple wipe-down job.

Look for a provider who conducts a pre- and post-remediation assessment, ideally with air and surface sampling analyzed by an independent microbiology lab. This is the only way to verify the spore count in the bedroom has been returned to a safe, ambient level before your children sleep there again. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for indoor air quality that reputable companies follow. Given the health impact, this is a case where professional intervention is the safest course of action.
