How to safely remove black mold with toddler and pets?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our apartment in Jumeirah for two years and just noticed a patch of black mould in the corner of my toddler's bedroom, behind the cot. It's gotten worse since the humidity spiked last week. I'm really worried because my son has been waking up with a stuffy nose and a cough. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of this myself, considering I have a small child and pets?

Start by isolating the area. Keep your toddler and pets out of the room and seal the door with plastic sheeting if possible. Open a window for ventilation. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety goggles.

For a small patch (under one square meter), a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (one part bleach to ten parts water) can be effective. Scrub the area with a stiff brush, but avoid over-saturating the wall as excess moisture promotes regrowth. Never mix cleaning products.

Given the location behind the cot and your child's symptoms, the visible patch may be part of a larger issue within the wall or under the flooring, especially common in Dubai due to condensation from AC units and high humidity. DIY cleaning only addresses surface mold, not the underlying moisture source.

For a child's bedroom, the safest approach is a professional assessment. They can identify the moisture source (like a leaking AC condensation line or seepage) and contain the area to prevent spores from spreading during remediation. After removal, a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the space is truly safe.
