How to safely remove blak mold in a humid bedroom« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I just discovered a patch of black mold behind their wardrobe in the master bedroom. It's been so humid lately in Dubai, and even though we run the AC, the room never feels completely dry. What's the safest and most effective way to get this removed without putting my family at risk?

The safest approach starts with identifying the mold type, as not all black discoloration is the toxic Stachybotrys. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself with proper precautions. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a detergent solution, not bleach, as bleach doesn't kill the roots and can worsen airborne spores in a humid environment like Dubai's.

The real challenge is addressing the moisture source. In a UAE bedroom, this is almost always condensation from AC airflow or a leak. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation. Ensure your AC is set to a consistently cool temperature, as frequent on/off cycling creates more condensation. Consider using a standalone dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid summer months.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odor, or returns after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Remediation here involves containment to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the house, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment. Reputable companies should provide before-and-after lab test results to verify the spore count has been returned to safe levels. For any health concerns, particularly with children, consulting a doctor is always recommended.
