How to safely remove closet mold and prevent humidity?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an exterior wall. The weird thing is, this started right after we turned the AC off for a few days during the cooler winter weather. What's the most effective way to clean this safely and how can I stop the humidity from building up in that closed space to prevent it from coming back?

That black mold likely appeared because the closet's interior wall cooled down when the AC was off, causing moisture from Dubai's humid air to condense on the surface. This is a common issue here during cooler months.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it safely yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a mixture of water and detergent. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage surfaces. After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry.

To prevent it from returning, you must address the humidity and lack of air circulation. The most effective solution is to improve airflow into the closet. Leave the closet doors ajar whenever possible. For a more permanent fix, consider having a HVAC technician install a small vent in the door or the wall connecting to the air-conditioned room, allowing cool, dry air from your AC to circulate inside. A small desiccant dehumidifier pouch placed inside the closet can also help absorb excess moisture.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the moisture issue may be more serious, potentially from a small leak in the exterior wall. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify the exact condensation source, which is crucial for a permanent fix.
