How to safely remove closet mold and prevent moisture?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has had this damp, mildewy smell for the past couple of months. I finally cleared everything out and found black speckled mold on the back wall and some of our leather bags. We run the AC constantly, but it seems worse since the humidity really kicked in. What’s the best way to clean this safely and what can I do to stop the moisture from building up in there again?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of condensation-induced mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai due to the extreme humidity and constant AC operation. The interior wall location suggests the problem is likely a thermal bridge where cold air from the AC is causing water vapor to condense on the slightly warmer wall surface within the enclosed closet space, creating the perfect damp environment for mold.

For safe removal, do not dry brush or use a vacuum without a HEPA filter, as this will aerosolize spores. For a small area, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Clean the hard surface with a solution of detergent and water, then follow with a disinfectant approved for mold cleanup. For the leather bags, a professional restoration service specializing in mold-damaged items is strongly recommended, as improper cleaning can permanently set the stains and odor.

Prevention is critical. The moisture source must be controlled. First, ensure your AC is not set excessively low, as a greater temperature differential increases condensation. Improve air circulation within the closet by leaving the door ajar periodically or installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber. For a more permanent solution, consider having a professional assess the insulation on that wall to mitigate the thermal bridging.

Given that the mold has already affected porous materials (leather), a professional inspection is advisable to confirm the extent of the growth and ensure it is handled according to UAE health and safety standards. For a thorough assessment and a guaranteed remediation plan, I recommend contacting the experts at Saniservice. They can diagnose the exact moisture source and provide a certified hygienization service. You can reach them at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com.
