How to safely remove mold and prevent bedroom humidity?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches for the past month, and I'm worried the mold is the cause. The room feels damp, even though we run the AC constantly. What's the most effective way to clean this safely and what can we do to stop the humidity from building up in that closed space again?

First, address the moisture source. That damp feeling in an air-conditioned room points to high humidity or a possible leak. In Dubai's climate, interior walls can develop condensation if insulation is inadequate or if there's a hidden plumbing leak. Check for any visible water stains on the wall or floor around that closet.

For safe removal of the visible patch, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and covering the floor with plastic. Light surface mold can often be scrubbed away with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid using bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can irritate airways. Thoroughly dry the area with a fan after cleaning.

To prevent recurrence, you must control the humidity in that enclosed space. Leave the closet doors open periodically to allow air circulation from your AC. Consider using a small desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet. Ensure your AC unit is functioning correctly and not short-cycling, which can fail to remove enough moisture from the air.

Given your wife's symptoms and the persistent dampness, this situation warrants professional assessment. The mold you see might only be a fraction of what's present. Non-visible mold can grow inside wall cavities if there's a leak. A proper inspection includes moisture mapping to find the water source and air or surface sampling to identify the mold species, which is crucial for health context. In many cases here, this requires a diagnostic approach beyond DIY cleaning.
