How to safely remove mold and prevent damp closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Marina apartment has started smelling really damp, and I just found a patch of black mold on the back wall behind my winter clothes. We run the AC constantly, but it seems like the humidity is still getting trapped in there. What’s the best way to clean this safely and what kind of dehumidifier or moisture absorber should I get to stop it from coming back?

The damp smell and visible black mold indicate high humidity trapped in an enclosed space, a common issue in Dubai's coastal apartments despite AC use. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of water and detergent or a dedicated mold remover, then wipe it down with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water). Dry the wall and the surrounding area thoroughly immediately after cleaning. Discard any moldy, porous items like cardboard boxes.
To prevent recurrence, you must address the moisture source. The wall behind the closet could be a cold spot where condensation forms from the AC, or there may be a hidden leak. Improve air circulation by leaving the closet doors ajar and ensuring the AC vent isn't blocked. For a closet of that size, a compact electric dehumidifier or a larger rechargeable moisture absorber unit would be measurably more effective than disposable silica gel packets. Place it at the back of the closet. If the mold returns quickly, covers a larger area, or you detect a persistent musty odor after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the condensation source or leak and take air samples to identify the mold species, which is important for assessing risk and guiding the remediation protocol. In many Marina buildings, this is linked to the building's external envelope and may require coordination with property management. |
